If you have experienced diabetes in or since your time of service, you can file a claim with the possibility of receiving one of the following disability ratings for compensation from the VA:

  1. 10%- If the veteran’s diabetes can be managed by a restricted diet and no other treatment.

  2. 20%- If the condition requires daily insulin injections or other medication, plus a restricted diet

  3. 40%- If the condition requires daily insulin injections, a restricted diet, and a low physical activity level.

  4. 60%- If the condition requires daily insulin injections, a restricted diet, low physical activity levels, 1 or 2 hospitalizations each year (or biweekly visits to a care provider), plus it causes side effects that would otherwise not make the person unemployable (without diabetes).

  5. 100%- If the condition requires daily insulin injections, a restricted diet, low physical activity levels, 3 or more hospitalizations each year (or weekly visits to a care provider), plus it causes continuous weight loss and weakness.

Secondary Claims

There are many secondary claims which can be made secondary to a VA rating for diabetes. For example if your diabetic neuropathy, coronary artery disease, hypertension or other conditions are all valid secondary claims!
